Autumn is for Road Trips – Everyone Knows That Vol2
Let’s plan ours in Sithonia this time, in Halkidiki of course!
There’s something magical about hitting the open road in autumn. The air is crisp, the summer crowds have thinned, but you can still enjoy the Greek sun!
Why Sithonia?
Sithonia is a hidden gem that offers a unique blend of stunning beaches, picturesque villages, and lush forests. While it’s a popular summer destination, autumn reveals a quieter, more serene side of Sithonia that’s perfect for a road trip. The cooler weather makes exploring the region’s natural beauty even more enjoyable, and the roads are far less crowded, allowing you to truly soak in the experience.

First Stop: Nikiti
Your first stop in Sithonia should be the charming village of Nikiti. This traditional village is known for its old stone houses and narrow streets. Take a stroll through the village, visit the historic church of Agios Nikitas, and perhaps grab a coffee at a local Barcarola café. The beach at Nikiti is also worth a visit, offering clear waters and a peaceful atmosphere.
Next Up: Vourvourou
From Nikiti, head south to Vourvourou, a unique destination where you can explore small, uninhabited islands just off the coast. Rent a kayak or take a boat tour to discover these hidden gems. The calm waters and stunning scenery make for a perfect autumn day on the water. Afterward, enjoy a leisurely meal at a seaside taverna, savoring fresh seafood with a view.
Exploring the Sithonia Forest
Autumn is the ideal time to explore Sithonia’s lush forests, which are often overlooked by summer tourists. Head inland to the Itamos Mountain, named after the Itamos tree, which is native to the area. There are several hiking trails that offer breathtaking views of the peninsula. The trails are well-marked, and you can choose a route that suits your level of adventure, whether you’re looking for a short walk or a more challenging hike.

Discover the Village of Parthenonas
Drive 40′ minutes to the village of Parthenonas, perched on the slopes of Mount Itamos. This traditional village is a living museum of Macedonian architecture, with restored stone houses and cobblestone streets. The views from Parthenonas are spectacular, especially in the soft light of the late afternoon. Take your time to explore the village and maybe visit a local winery to taste some of the region’s excellent wines.
Sarti: A Coastal Paradise
No road trip in Sithonia would be complete without a stop in Sarti, a coastal village with one of the best beaches on the peninsula. In autumn, the beach is almost deserted, giving you plenty of space to relax and enjoy the serenity. The vibrant colors of the surrounding hills contrast beautifully with the turquoise waters, creating a picture-perfect scene.
Wrap-Up: Porto Koufo and Toroni
As your road trip nears its end, make your way to the southern tip of Sithonia. Porto Koufo, the largest natural harbor in Greece, is a must-see. The dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters make this a stunning spot for photography and quiet reflection. Just a short drive away is Toroni, where you can explore ancient ruins and enjoy one last swim before heading back.
*Try Taverna Tzitzikas for a happy ending!
