Beach Hoping In Sithonia,Halkidiki

The complete beach guide to Halkidiki’s second peninsula — from Blue Flag shores to secret coves reachable only by boat.

Halkidiki’s Best-Kept Secret

If Kassandra is the peninsula everyone goes to, Sithonia is the one they come back for. The middle finger of Halkidiki is wilder, quieter, and considerably less developed ,a combination of pine-forested hills tumbling into turquoise water that makes it, beach for beach, the most beautiful of the three peninsulas.

With close to 100 beaches lining its coast, many of them still unorganised or reachable only by boat, Sithonia rewards the visitor who is willing to leave the main road. The villages are quieter, the tavernas more local, and the water ,particularly in the south, takes on the kind of Caribbean blue that you rarely associate with northern Greece.

The west coast is softer and more accessible, with broad sandy beaches and established tourist infrastructure. The east coast is rockier, more dramatic, and home to the peninsula’s most celebrated beaches: Kavourotrypes, Karydi, Armenistis. Plan at least three days. One is not enough.

Western Shoreline

The Western Coast

01  Nikiti

  Gateway    ·    Sandy    ·    Organised

The first proper beach you encounter as you enter Sithonia from the north, and a reliable introduction to what the peninsula offers. A long, sandy stretch with organised facilities, good water, and a pretty village immediately behind it worth exploring. The port area has a different character from the beach itself — quieter, more local, with tavernas that fill up early in the evening.

02  Kalogria

  Scuba Diving    ·    Turquoise    ·    Pine-Backed

Consistently ranked among the finest beaches on the entire peninsula, and the praise is warranted. A long arc of bright sand meets intensely turquoise water, with dense pine forest rising directly behind the shore. Kalogria is also one of Sithonia’s best spots for scuba diving, with an established dive centre operating here through the season. Arrive before 10am in August.

03  Lagomandra

Natural Shade    ·    Organised    ·    Family

What sets Lagomandra apart is the canopy of trees that extends almost to the water’s edge, providing natural shade without sunbeds — a rare luxury on an organised beach. The water is warm and clear, and the general mood is relaxed. Popular with families precisely because it is neither too wild nor too overdeveloped.

04  Neos Marmaras & Banieres

Town Beach    ·    Water Sports    ·    Accessible

Neos Marmaras is the commercial hub of Sithonia — a proper town rather than a resort. Banieres beach sits within easy walking distance and offers a long sandy stretch with comprehensive water sports facilities and organised sunbeds. Stay in town for dinner: the waterfront tavernas here are some of the best value on the peninsula.

05  Tristinika

Alternative    ·    Sunset Views    ·    Beach Bar

A beach with a following. The Ethnic beach bar perched on the rocks above Tristinika has cultivated a crowd that is different from the mainstream — alternative, music-conscious, not loud. The beach itself has thick sand, exceptional light for photography, and sunsets that are regularly cited as the best on the western coast. Go late afternoon and stay.

06  Toroni & Destenika

Historical    ·    Wide Beach    ·    Unspoilt

Toroni sits above one of the largest bays on the western coast and has been inhabited since antiquity — the ruins of ancient Toroni are visible above the shore. Destenika, five minutes south, is a wide beige-sand beach framed by lush vegetation. Most of it remains unspoilt, with only the edges organised. In late September it becomes genuinely magical: almost empty, under an angle of light that is entirely its own.

07  Porto Koufo

Natural Harbour    ·    Fishing    ·    Unique

Technically a beach, but Porto Koufo is really one of the most unusual natural formations in Halkidiki. Enclosed almost entirely by two mountains, the bay resembles a fjord or an inland lake more than an open sea. The water is exceptionally deep and utterly still. It functions as a working fishing harbour, and the fish tavernas here — particularly at the water’s edge — serve some of the freshest seafood on the peninsula.

08  Kalamitsi

  Sandy    ·    Snorkelling    ·    Romantic

A small, well-organised beach with fine sand and some of Sithonia’s best snorkelling just off the rocks at the southern end. The attached campsite and the beach restaurants — literally in the sand — give Kalamitsi a relaxed, almost timeless feel. A short walk through pine trees leads to Kalamitsaki, the wilder nudist extension.

Eastern Shoreline

The Eastern Coast

09  Vourvourou & Diaporos Island

Boat Trips    ·    Blue Lagoon    ·    Must Do

Vourvourou is the base for what many consider the single best experience in Sithonia: renting a small boat and exploring the waters around Diaporos island. No licence required. The islet’s highlight is the Blue Lagoon — an enclosed bay of water so astonishingly clear and shallow that it looks fabricated. Myrsini beach on the island itself is reachable only by sea. Allow a full day.

10  Karydi

Iconic    ·    Rock Formations    ·    Vourvourou

The flagship beach of the Sithonia peninsula, and one of the most-photographed stretches of sand in all of Halkidiki. Pale grey sand of unusual fineness, sky-blue water, and a dramatic scatter of rock formations — locally called “Rocks on the Beach” — that divide the shore and provide endless climbing and photography opportunities. Shallow entry makes it ideal for children. Come very early in high summer or accept the crowds as part of the experience.

11  Kavourotrypes

Iconic    ·    White Rock    ·    Wild

Also known as Orange Beach. The most spectacular beach on the peninsula and among the most celebrated in all of Greece. Boasting striking white limestone rock formations, intoxicating natural surroundings, and water of a depth of colour that defies easy description, Kavourotrypes is not easily reached but completely worth the effort. No organised sunbeds. Arrive early, bring everything you need, and stay as long as you can.

12  Armenistis

Fine White Sand    ·    Partly Organised    ·    Secluded

Armenistis consistently ranks among Halkidiki’s most alluring beaches — a long sweep of fine white sand with turquoise water in a setting that feels genuinely secluded despite the facilities on offer. The camping ground here is one of the best in Greece, and it attracts a crowd that prefers pine trees and birdsong to beach bars and pool parties. Strongly recommended.

13  Sarti

Long Beach    ·    Village    ·    Mt Athos Views

The largest settlement on the eastern coast and the centre of life for this side of the peninsula. Sarti beach is long and sandy with a full range of services, but the real draw is the view directly across the water to the monasteries of Mount Athos — visible most clearly in the early morning light. The village itself has good restaurants, a weekly market, and a pace that is unhurried even in August.

14  Kriaritsi

  Wild    ·    Boulders    ·    Camping

Not for everyone, and all the better for it. Kriaritsi is a wild beach marked by large grey boulders set against white sand and improbably clear water — the contrast is genuinely dramatic. The campsite here means it retains a lively but low-key atmosphere even in peak season. Arrive by boat at night and watch the plankton glow in the dark water. One of those experiences that is difficult to explain and impossible to forget.

15  Platanitsi

Southern Tip    ·    Long Beach    ·    Diving

At the southernmost reaches of Sithonia, Platanitsi offers a long stretch of sand with excellent facilities and one of the peninsula’s well-regarded diving clubs. The water here is deeper and the underwater landscape more varied than on the calmer western coast. A good base for exploring the southernmost tip of the peninsula by boat, where the coastline becomes increasingly wild and largely inaccessible by road.
