How to Experience the Wine Roads of Northern Greece
The Wine Roads are really a series of suggested, select routes for the avid and curious traveler interested in visiting some of the most picturesque and fascinating venues in Europe.
On Sunday, November 12th, wineries of the Wine Routes of Greece participate in the European Day of Wine Tourism.
Visitors of wineries will have the opportunity to walk around wine regions, get to know Greek wine-producers, enjoy the scenery in beautiful vineyards, take a tour in wine production, maturation and ageing areas, try new and vintage wine and get an update on the fresh wines of this year’s harvest which has just been completed.
Wine-tasting is the art of ‘sampling’ or ‘tasting’ a wine. Subjecting it to the scrutiny of our senses, assessing it with the help of our memory and expressing our judgement of its quality with the aid of a specialist ‘vocabulary’, which enables us to describe its distinctive features.
There are wine roads in almost all wine-producing countries. In Greece, the first organized wine roads were outlined in 1997 by the Wine Producers Association of the Northern Greece Vineyard and given the official name “Wine Roads of Northern Greece.”
Today, there are 29 members in the Association and 8 routes that cross the whole of Northern Greece, with suggested stops at 32 notable wineries of Thessaly (Rapsani and Krania), Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace. Signage along the roads directs travelers to vineyards, wineries and other points of interest.
Our favorite one is of course the Route of Halkidiki! The Wine Route of Halkidiki starts at Agios Pavlos, moves on to the Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos peninsulas and crosses the mountainous areas of Halkidiki, stopping at Arnea, before reaching the sea at the resort of Olimpiada in the east.
